ADM Investing in Spiritwood Facility to Expand North America Crush Capacity

ADM is ramping up its North American oilseed crush capacity through a series of targeted investments across four U.S. facilities, including the Spiritwood, North Dakota, plant operated through its Green Bison joint venture with Marathon Petroleum Corporation. The Chicago-based agribusiness giant announced that the collective upgrades are expected to unlock roughly 700,000 metric tons of additional annual crush capacity, translating to more than 25 million bushels of new demand for American farmers.

At the Spiritwood facility, ADM plans to invest in operational optimization and select equipment improvements, with work slated for completion by mid-2028. The other three facilities receiving upgrades include plants in Frankfort, Indiana; Deerfield, Missouri; and Lincoln, Nebraska, each tailored with individualized enhancement plans designed to boost throughput while leveraging existing infrastructure rather than building from scratch.

Gary McGuigan, president of ADM’s North America Ag Services and Oilseeds business, said the investments reflect the company’s focus on growth opportunities where long-term demand trends are creating new possibilities for farmers and customers alike. He pointed to strong demand driven by U.S. biofuels policy as a key force behind the expansion, saying that building on an established footprint allows ADM to invest wisely while preserving flexibility and delivering meaningful capacity gains across its network.

The company is also actively evaluating several other North American crush locations for similar future investments. These latest projects build on other recent commitments by ADM to strengthen its domestic footprint, including upgrades at its Clinton, Iowa, corn facility and capacity expansions at its elevator in Optima, Oklahoma. McGuigan noted that the investments will help connect more American farmers to growing domestic and global markets while reinforcing the infrastructure that underpins U.S. agriculture.
