USDA announces $50 million investment to expand timber production, enhance forest health in Nevada

A major boost is coming to the timber industry in Carson City as the U.S. Department of Agriculture announces a 50 million dollar investment for Tahoe Forest Products. Alida Ceballos, the USDA Rural Development Nevada State Director, shared that the funding will be facilitated through a partnership with MapleMark Bank, allowing the company to secure guaranteed loans to significantly upgrade its processing capabilities. The move is part of a broader federal effort to strengthen domestic timber production while simultaneously addressing environmental concerns across the region.

The capital infusion will allow Tahoe Forest Products to transition from producing mostly raw materials to manufacturing high quality finished lumber geared toward retail distributors and large scale construction projects. Specifically, the company plans to install new kilns, a planer mill, and a fresh saw line using timber sourced from both Nevada and California. These upgrades are expected to increase the facility’s capacity for premium lumber by roughly 60,000 thousand board feet, moving them beyond simple rough lumber production.

Beyond the economic growth and job creation in rural Nevada, the initiative serves a critical ecological purpose. By expanding the capacity of local sawmills, the USDA aims to help clear out dangerous fuel loads within forestlands that otherwise contribute to catastrophic wildfires. Removing these combustible materials protects nearby communities and vital infrastructure while promoting overall forest health through sustainable harvesting practices.

This project falls under several federal programs designed to modernize wood processing facilities throughout the country. To date, the Timber Production Expansion Guaranteed Loan Program has funneled over 165 million dollars into various states including Oregon, Idaho and Maine. Officials noted that this latest investment aligns with recent executive orders focused on rapidly expanding American timber production to ensure national resource stability and regional prosperity.
